BEWARE ........ LOVE MY CRUZER 256MB, BUT YOU CAN NOT TRASH THE USB2 WINDOWS DRIVER ON THE DRIVE OR IT WILL NOT WORK ANYMORE. Sansdisk is replacing mine, due to this, as there is no way to reinitialize the drive if the driver info is thrown out, so be careful about deleting file off it. Sansdisk has beeen fantastic, in helping me with the problem.

I know the theory is that USB 2 works in OSX. I have a generic 5 port OHCI
USB 2 card in my beige running 10.2.8 that works fine as a USB 1 card with
a mouse, printer and a camera.

Is there any way short of buying a USB 2 peripheral and plugging it in to
see if the card supports USB 2 on my Mac?

The card may support 2.0, but prior to 10.3 the drivers aren't there, and I'm not sure the drivers in 10.3 are universal. A;; the theory about USB 2.0 is over the fact that Apple used a USB 2.0 chipset in later G4's.

I do know to enable USB 2 on my Sonnet Trio card requires a driver from sonnet, whereas usb 1 on the same card doesn't.

That said, I've found these Cruzer USB memory sticks from Sandisk <http://www.sandisk.com/consumer/cruzermini.asp> to be an incredibly useful sneakernet device. 256MB ones are $50 at Costco, where I got mine, when they have 'em in stock. I love mine and use it all the time. If you need, get one and see. Even at USB 1 speeds it's quite useful.
