Ethernet via a crossover cable had been working very well until this week. The machine with the problem is a 9600 running OS 9.1.
Crossover cable connected to what?
Somehow the Appletalk settings were changed. The connection which I had set at ethernet suddenly was changed to printer port. It does this every time the machine is booted.
Right. AppleTalk requires that a valid ethernet connection be available before it will initialize - essentially it looks at the CTS line. If the connection isn't working, then AppleTalk reverts to the Printer port.
Apple's intentions were that crossover cables ONLY be used when connecting to PowerBooks (whoze NIC ports are wired a bit differently). All other ethernet set-ups would be more permanent, therefore would use a hub or switch (which supplied the necessary signals). So using a crossover between two desktop Macs can be problematic...
When I try to save the "active" setting an error panel says there is a problem with the connection. A change to regular cables and a hub has not helped. The PRAM is zapped . The control panel reinstalled. Finder prefs trashed. The desktop rebuilt., and all steps in setup retraced.
Reinstall the control panel? That's just a GUI; kindof like changing hats because your shoe is missing. Finder prefs? Nothing to do with Open Transport. PRAM zap, eh - the PRAM only retains a default AppleTalk setting; it's overridden by the AppleTalk control panel and preferences. Desktop database? Nothing to do with networking.
Baring an actual NIC failure, reset things this way:
Turn off File Sharing on both computers. Turn off AppleTalk on both computers. Trash the AppleTalk Preferences on both computers. Reboot both.
Turn on AppleTalk and point it to the Ethernet port on each computer. If one of the Macs isn't a PowerBook, then you may have to switch from one to the other until you get them both happy.
Then turn on File Sharing.
