> Will BeOS run on Quadra 800? (I had one gifted to me recently that I'd like to have some fun with) Where can I get a copy of BeOS? > > My first Mac was a Mac Plus; I have to work on Wintel boxes all day, and now I play with my macs (mostly PCI clones) on my own > time! GREAT to find this list!
Unfortunately it needs a PCI based PowerPC Mac, and a 603[e] / 604[e] processor. The following list is a pretty good resource: http://www.tycomsystems.com/beos/ppc_ready.html It's a mirror of Be's list. As for getting a copy, you need a retail CD as BeOS PPC was never given away as a demo (except really out dated developers and pre release versions.) I have run what's known as 'PR2' on my 9500, and it's usable, but something like R4, R4.5 or R5 is a whole load better. If you don't know heaps about BeOS then please feel free to come visit us. Best place for Mac users to check out is http://www.bebox.nu - geared to BeBoxes, but as BeBoxen are PowerPC bretheren, we Macites find fellow comrads there too. Also worth checking out BeShare. You can get a Java based client that runs under most MacOS version with the Java Runtime installed at: http://www.varnernet.com/javashare/index.jsp and it's also worth checking out http://www.bebits.com for software, and http://www.beosjournal.org for news an other links.
