My almost 5 YO son has my old 9500 and he likes to play all his kiddie
software on it.
A couple weeks ago his grandpop cleaned it all out and upgraded to OS 9.2
While bringing it home, we somehow lost the little adapter to convert from
the video card (I think it's a stock ixMicro Twin Turbo) to a VGA 15" NEC
monitor.
Soooo...I don't know what that particular adapter was called and where I can
get a replacement. It wasn't a standard mac to VGA adapter, I have lots of
those.
I am considering upgrading his computer, especially if I can't find this
adapter.
He likes to play some of the new games that need at least a G3 or faster
processor, and a faster video card like a ATI Rage 128.
Can you give me recommendations of what are the best PCI cards to get? Any I
should avoid?
Please keep in mind that this is for a 5 YO kid, so I need to keep it economical. He'll probably be getting my G4 in another year or so ;-)
thanks, Susan

Hmm, if you're wanting to do low-buck, I'd try to find an older Rage 128-based card, if you can find one. I got a Nexus 128 on eBay for my 14-year old son's 7600 for $40 or so, and it's served him well (he hasn't complained, anyway) even for Warcraft III under OS X 10.2. His machine has a g4/400, but I've used the Nexus in my 9600 with a g3/300, and it's a respectable PCI card. Also, you might be able to find an older G3 or G4 upgrade for the 7/8/9x00 series for not too much on eBay, if you're diligent. A new sonnet g3/500 runs about $150 from OWC, I believe, so even if you bought a new G3 and a used Rage 128-based PCI card, you should be able to hook him up for right around $200 with something that'd last for a while, if the G4 doesn't get handed over to him.
*shrugs* I'm in the same situation, though it's for myself, as my son's machine is more powerful than mine :D
