I think I can answer your first question.

Okay, facing the "back" of the printer (opposite the paper feed tray), you
should see the Interface Plate (this is the metal plate with the various
ports on it, like LocalTalk, RS-232, SCSI, etc.) You'll see two metal screws
on the left and right sides of the plate.  Loosen the screws and that plate
should slide out towards you.  The motherboard is attached to that plate.

Also, if you're installing more RAM, I think the higher capacity chips are
supposed to be installed in the first banks.
