Yes, if you want to take full advantage of the newer ATA drive's performance. If you're just wanting to increase your storage capacity and get some measure of performance increase (not necessarily the maximum), you should be able to hook up any normal 7200 RPM ATA drive under 120GB to the built-in controller. I've run both a 40GB and an 80GB drive that way on a beige G3.
