You're in the UK, surely you've got some handle on BT and their line connection costs? Sure, it's easy to get a 'mostly' free connection from the for a dial-up 56k modem, but there are limits to that service. Some of us don't have the luxury of using their schemes, for whatever reason. Some countries do not even *have* free call schemes yet. Until recently I used an ISP where I got charged standard BT rate, by the minute - coz I used the servece for email alone and it was bloody cheap (less than half what people life Freeserve want per month.)
