zero all data overwrites all your data with 0's, making it much harder to recover. That's still not technically up to DOD specifications, however. Some files can be recovered as many as 8-10 times after being written over. Not that this matters though, unless some of you are criminals :POn 04-02-2004 12:09, Bill's In th' House Connelly, [EMAIL PROTECTED], wrote:
it does remove any possibility of recovering any data from previous usage ... which is what some people want, as well ...
I'm not sure about this! And if this is important for what ever reasons (lifting eyebrows), put that disc in the shredder and take a new one, seen the prices of today. Not speaking about the time of doing a llf and the possible problems with such a format and a disc needing a llf.
In order to securely delete files you must use the secure empty trash function in os x or a similiar program, such as norton utilities wipe or the similar function in TTP. There is also a program out there called SuperScrubber that also securely erases files. Using special tools however, were you to get into a situation where the gov. needed to retrieve files from your hd, the only function to really do it would be something like shred the drive and burn it.
If anyone is more interested in facts on this, read "Secrets & Lies: Digital Security in a Networked world" by Bruce Schnier, interesting book with some interesting remarks on cryptography, security, etc
