I did it for upload speeds. When I work on huge projects at home I have my computer set to backup certain folders and documents to my home server and my work server. As far as it being a felony, the major corporations pick and choose what they want to prosecute. If you have high speed internet access, go back and read your TOS - terms of service. I guarantee that sharing your access with more than one computer is a violation, probably a felony.
Theft of services (uncapping) is a felony. All the cable companies are actively searching their logs for such actions, and prosecuting.
Sharing your own connection to your own computers is neither theft of services (the modem still caps the throughput), nor is it a violation of your AUP/TOS (in most areas).
