You might save a few dollars in buying your own modem (if your provider even allows you using your own modem), but I am sure the cable company will start playing games with you when the system isn't running correctly.
This is exactly the game that Comcast plays. By buying your own modem, you save $3 per month on your bill. But then when something dies, the modem is always at fault and Comcast will not give you outtage credits for the umpteen days it takes for you to swap it out.
