Thanks for your help, and to all who posted.
I did some digging around at the University computer lab's junk bin, and found an SVGA 
adaptor which seems to work well at resolutions up to 1600 x 1280! One of the list 
member's was kind enough to sell me his non OEM card which I'll purchase and have the 
ability to run 2 monitors and SVGA native.

At one time I mananged a college graphics lab with 80 9600s and 8600s . I had an old 
9600 and sold it two years ago when I upgraded to a Quicksilver G4.
I am still amazed at how well designed the 9600 series were. The guy who sold it to me 
said he sells at least one a week, and that they outsell the beige G3 tower! OS9 runs 
beautifully with very little memory, and even Photoshop 6.0 is respectable on this 
machine with enough scratch disk space.

Long live the Power macs!
