Perhaps such things can be quantified in specific situations but it is hard
to do so in general. My own experience is that since I went 500+ I have
almost no freezes and do not have to be continually watching memory.
Stability increases. The Mac is not perfect (unsurprisingly) and has faults
in memory management (when you quit apps, the RAM is not normally always
*completely* available again without restart or special procedures (One
such, I used a lot is Finder's Friend to quit the finder and "clear" or
"defrag" the RAM). 

You want something general, lawlike? How about: "All increases of RAM (up to
at least ~~ 800) are worth it"

Get it up to 512 and interleave as much as pos. Ram is cheap now...
