If the camera requires USB for interface then you will need a USB card in the 8600. Depending on the camera, it may mount on the desktop as an external drive. Some have special drivers that may not be available for OS lower than OSX.
If the camera has a removable media card you may be able to get one of the universal readers to interface with a USB card and read the photos directly off the card with out attaching the camera.
