How possible and nice would a firewire HD be on a PCI card on a PCI Mac (7300,7600 etc)? Anyone done this? Pardon me, I forget.

Well, if you don't need to boot from it you will not have a problem. The Mac OS needs to start in order for the firewire to work.
Having had a great deal of trouble getting an iOmega CD-RW USB to work. I chucked it and got both a Buslink CD-RW and a Buslink external hard drive. Both firewire.
My fire wire card is unbranded and I don't remember the name of the supplier but it was recommended by someone on this list. All of this was pure plug and play. A pleasure compared to the many many hours spent trying to get the iOmega to burn and behave.
But the hard drive does not want the Mac to be shut down and so far won't let it shut down with the firewire plugged in. . I'm trying to figure that one out.
