Dan writes,

<Mac OS 8.6 runs just fine on the Power Mac 7200.

Personally, I really like 8.6. Very stable. Lots of technology
improvements between 8.1 and 8.6... Well worth having.

Thanks for the info, but it'll have to wait. Not in a position to
actually upgrade anything now. I wouldn't even have the 8020 CDRW if my
bf hadn't snagged it for me: he saw it on the way to be thrown out and
thought I'd like to have it (true enough: if I can get it to work). I
guess I figure that a free SCSI CDRW, when a backup machine is one of
those things I want but have to postpone, is something I want to try to
use if I can.

<hum. As far as I know, there is no free burning software that runs
on OS 8. Apple's Disk Burner is free, but requires OS 9.1 and has a
very limited number of supported drives.>

OK, thanks but obviously this won't work.

<Perhaps an older vers of CharisMac's Discribe might work? The new
version requires OS 8.6, but an older might do it. And Discribe
comes as a "demo" that will burn 5 CDs. http://www.charismac.com/>

Hmmmm. Well, do they have a demo for OS 8.1? -- because I won't be
getting 8.6 any time soon, if at all (another issue I have with an 8.6
upgrade is the possibility that if 8.6 takes my 7200 too "far up" to use
in conjunction with my PB 190: OS 7.5.2, even if/when my finances
improve, I won't do it). But that's another matter of curiosity, probably
best saved for the good folks on the PB list.

<I have Toast 3.5.7, which will run on OS 8.1. Was going to offer to
trade you for Toast 5.... but I found
(1) The Smart & Friendly CD-R8020 is not listed as being supported by
Toast 3.>

That's too bad, this is a trade I'd have gladly made with you -- in a
flat nanosecond! :-)

<(2) According to
   http://rpp.roxio.com/drives/?page=supported_drives&ltr=S
Your drive isn't support until Toast 4.05

At least Toast 4 will run on OS 8.1... Perhaps there's someone out
there that will trade you for it. I recommend joining the LowEndMac
Swap list for that.

Okay, thanks, I'll definitely go here.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions, even if I'm only partially
able to implement them at this time. Thank you so much.

~Yersinia.
