OK, what is usual? As a temporary workaround (though I recommend it anyway) what about do not set the HD to sleep EVER but just the screen monitor after a while. If prob persist, set monitor to Never too. Use a stand alone screen saver instead. Not good to be switching the HD on and off anyway. Leave it or them on while you are working or are likely to work in the day... If there is going to be a break for a good many hours or overnight just switch off.
