Just a quick follow up: Plextor says that this drive should work with any Mac (with SCSI capability) without needing special software. Even so, I tried a couple of differant Apple CD-ROM extensions with no luck. Then I found a "hack" for the latest Apple CD/DVD extension using Resedit at ResExellence which allows this extension to access the drive. Everything seems to work now, except that I have not succeeded in booting the computer off of that drive.
