When I mentioned the Best Data 56k that was just for FYI. If anyone can tell
me something else that will compare to the daily (and I mean daily) 47,333
speeds of the iMac 6 blocks away than please do.
Thanks,

The main thing is the quality of the phone line, not the modem. All external modems are "intelligent", meaning they have all of the modem circuitry in the modem and do not depend on the computer for connection speed, unlike the cheap "winmodems" on the dark side that depend on the computers processor to do the work of the modem.

Your modem connects at the highest speed that it can with minimal errors. A "dirty" phone line or one with a lot of devices on it will introduce more errors into the connection and cause the connection speed to drop. To give you an example, I had a Global Village 56k modem on a variety of Macs from a stock 6100 through a 9500 to a Maxed out beige G3 (G4 533MHz zif). When it rained hard for a couple of days, water would get in the lines and drop my connection speed from 52k down to less than 9k.

I am willing to bet that if you took your 5400 over to the house where the iMac is and hooked up to their phone lines you would get very close to the 47,333 that they are getting, if not better.

Make a voice call on your modem line. Is is a VERY clear connection? If not, call your phone company to complain. BUT DO NOT MENTION A MODEM PROBLEM!!. They only guarantee modem speeds of 2400 baud (2.4k). Just tell them that there is noise on the line.

Do you have a lot of devices on the same line as the modem? Try removing them and see what happens. Also, try connecting the modem as close to where the main phone line comes into your house as possible and see what happens, you may have a dirty connection in the house wiring.
