I use a Best Data 56k v90 external modem. on my 7X00 series hybrid. When using the Best Data drivers the best I could ever do was 47,600 ( kbps ?). I have used the Earthlink Mac modem driver for several years and Remote Access always reports 57, 600.
There are TWO basic speeds, DCE and DTE.
The Data Communications Equipment (DCE) speed is the speed of the raw carrier over the phone line.
The Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) speed is the speed at which the modem is talking to your Mac. This is over the serial interface for an external modem, or via a virtual path thru a bus, for an internal modem.
By default, per the Hayes standards, all modems are supposed to report their DTE speed in their CONNECT message. This is why Remote Access only reports 57600 bps. Some modem scripts change the setting, so the modem reports the DCE speed in the CONNECT message...
But... That DCE speed isn't the last word. V.90 modems "retrain" every n seconds (n starts at 30, but is variable). They sniff the quality of the connection (the error rate) and shift the carrier speed up or down as necessary. This means that within 30 seconds of you first connecting, your modem speed is different! But Remote Access has no mechanism to show you the new speed!
After your modem retrains, the only way, on a Mac, to figure out the new speed is to run a throughput test... Yes - the implication there is that other operating systems have ways to temporarily suspend the IP stack so you can talk directly to the modem to make it cough its stats.
FWIW, - Dan.
