Hi, people. This is the first time I write to this list. I hope I'm doing fine. I own a PowerPC 9600/300 and I'm thinking of make some upgrades to it. I want to use a FireWire or USB card but some people told me that there might be some problems with PCI slot voltage. I've been told that if I use a card which doesn't work with the same voltage as the machine does it can make the card get burnt. As I don't want any of that to happen I'd appreciate if some of you can help me telling me the voltage that my machine can handle and the one that newer machines and cards do. Any other information about it would also be appreciated. For the moment no more questions. Thanks and best regards to all of you. Alejandro. BsAs, Argentina.
Someone has no idea what they are talking about. There is nothing special about Apple's PCI implementation, it uses all the regular voltages. The one in the 9600 is a little old (2.0) but is completely standard. To add a USB card, stick with a 2 port USB 1.1 card that is labeled 'OHCI' compliant or is listed as working with the 9600. Do not get a card that lists it working with the 'Beige G3 or better' as those machines have an updated PCI bus (2.1) and the cards tend to not work in the older PCI 2.0 bus machines. For Firwire cards any OHCI compliant card will work fine.
There is one thing about upgrades, the 9600/300 is know as a 'Mach V' machine and the CPU daughter card (the one holding the CPU) uses a different setup for the connector and any CPU upgrades must support the Mach V cards. All the ones being made currently do, however some of the older ones do not and when plugged in will not work.
