Thanks, but no-go - have re-booted ad-nausea and reset the PRAM 20 times, all to no avail. If the monitor is connected directly to the video card during boot-up, the display works fine, even after unplugging the monitor, reconnecting it to the KVM (probably an exaggeration to call this a KVM - it is labelled Data Transfer Switch) then connecting the 9600 to the KVM.
