Hi, I'm a PowerPC 9600/300 with 224MB RAM MAC OS 9.1 computer user. The
reason why I'm writing today is that I cannot play avi movies on my
QuickTime or RealPlayer. It keeps telling me that there is a compressor
missing. I've downloaded the DivX 5.1 codec and Xvid codec and it doesn't
work yet. I'd be pleased if some of you can help me.
Thanks a lot, and best regards to you all.

.avi is a 'container' format for any number of different codecs. QT will play some, but not others. The best choice is to grit your teeth and download Windows Media Player from Microsoft.

and meadeea player will play them ? it never worked for me...

Well it's entirely possible to stuff something completely Windows-centric into an AVI, leading to files that will *only* play in Windows...but WMP will play more .avi files than QT will.
