Hi, I'm a PowerPC 9600/300 with 224MB RAM MAC OS 9.1 computer user. The reason why I'm writing today is that I cannot play avi movies on my QuickTime or RealPlayer. It keeps telling me that there is a compressor missing. I've downloaded the DivX 5.1 codec and Xvid codec and it doesn't work yet. I'd be pleased if some of you can help me.
.avi is a 'container' format for any number of different codecs. QT will play some, but not others. The best choice is to grit your teeth and download Windows Media Player from Microsoft.
Before you jump into the abyss of Windows Media Player there are several things to try:
Install QuickTime 6. While QuickTime 5 is faster (able to play movies at much higher frame rates), QT 6 includes more codecs and is required for DivX now.
In some cases, the "get info" function of QuickTime Player will say what codec is needed.
Download and install the Intel Indeo codecs. They're available from within the software update gizmo in the QuickTime control panel.
Make sure you DON'T have a 3ivx codec installed, then try the latest DivX codec (version 5.1.1). Make sure it's installed correctly -- the file "DivX 5 Codec" must be in your Extensions folder and you have to reboot to make it work.
Note that some "badly" encoded DivX videos will cause QuickTime Player to seem to hang. It's not hung, it's just thumbing its nose at you, er a reading the whole video file for the heck of it. When it's done, it will go back to the beginning of the file and start playing, maybe.
If the above doesn't help, then RUN FULL BACKUPS then try Windows Media Player.
