>They also have the two different motherboard types and speeds: 50 MHz on >most and 46 MHz on the 233 MHz 9600.
Both can run at 50 MHz. On the non-Mach5s, the bus speed is a sub-multiple of the processor speed, hence the slightly lower than 50 MHz bus speed on those models. Since all the Mach5s have a procesor speed which is a multiple of 50 MHz, all these machines operate the bus at 50 MHz. The slowest 9600 is hte best starting point for a G3 upgraded 9600 as these are usually the cheapest. > Are there unique problems associated with upgrading the earlier Tsunami >or later Kansas boards , with the two different types of processor cards >that are incompatible. No, but in general, the Kansas machines are best retained as 604evs, and not upgraded to G3s. >I will probably be putting a processor upgrade card into whatever 9600 I >get. Are there any problems I should know about with one type being more >finicky or unstable than the other ? Is the extra-large power supply on >the 300 MHz model a notable plus or not ? All have the very same 390 Watt power supply. The published specs on the later models are in error. The same 390 Watt power supply was used in the 8600. A "six slot edition" ZIF is probably the best one for a 9600. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
