Question: I have an 8600/300 that is running OS 8.0

To make the move to 9.0, will that wipe out everything on my hard drive, or only if I have to go to HFS+ ?

I think 9.0 will install on a HFS disk.

However, moving to HFS+ is a no brainer, so back up your HDD, reformat and install fresh. Then you have a much more optimal OS install and the warm fuzzy feeling from having a recent backup...
