I used to rely on Zip drives for back-up and storage of files too. Zip drives and disks can be found cheap these days and will do the job for you , but older SCSI external CD-R's can be found for about the same price and the CD's are cheap, not to mention holding a lot more data.

I still have my Zip drive but don't use it much since getting a burner. But Zip disks can be re-written many times and still carry a lifetime warranty from defects so if a disk stopped working, just call Iomega and send it in for a replacement.

Both Zip Drives and CD burners are good inexpensive options for you.

Back in the day when i used a PM 7100 I relied very heavily on Zip drives for back up and transfers of large amounts of data. Actually, I still do, but not quite as much as I used to. eventually, i'll be moving to those little USB keychain drive thingies, haven't decided when. Just the same, for an 8600 a zip drive, or similar drive would be excellent for you, allowing you to back up up to 100 mb, or possibly 250 if the 250 mb drives are compatible with the 8600.
It's possible, also, to get a CD RW drive, which has been working very well for me on my iMac and Compaq presario tower.
Other options could include getting an external dirve, or another internal drive to put all the files and data you need onto, and then reformat and install the newer OS.
I'd aggree with the others- reformat to HFS+ is definately soemthing You should be getting ready for, especially if you're dealing with more than a couple gigs of hard drive. You won't regret it.
