I'm starting to realise that unlike Linux or Windows (or even Psion) an external modem needs specific drivers to run it under Apple, rather than getting away with generic drivers. I didn't know about Apple System Profiler, and give it a go with that. Failing that I'll buy a Apple specific modem from PC World!
