Have you given Hayes modem a try? It's abot as generic as generic can get,

Many thanks for your help with my Apple problem.
I'm starting to realise that unlike Linux or Windows (or even Psion) an external modem needs specific drivers to run it under Apple, rather than getting away with generic drivers.
I didn't know about Apple System Profiler, and give it a go with that. Failing that I'll buy a Apple specific modem from PC World!
