Still, try some other modem scripts. See if there are any that suggest -
what's the word? - generic-ness. Eg. I have a script for a 56k modem that
has the word "generic" in it. You might need something like this for your
33K one.

Perhaps try FreePPP as your connection software, I think it has some
initialisation features to it. You also can alter the strings to do with
port speed, flow control, dial type, modem init string settings. Maybe worth
fiddling with these if you have no luck with some other script. You might
have to dig around and collect a few modem scripts, there are sites that
list such scripts... a fiddle, 56K modems are pretty cheap...
