Hi Folks,
I've installed my sonnet G4/800 card in my 9600. It's
working ok, but not trouble free. I also pulled two 32
MB DIMMS and replaced them with two128 MB EDO DIMMS
that are guaranteed to to be compatible with G4
upgrades. Total RAM: 768 MB, matched pairs,
interleaved.
In OS9 everything seems ok at first blush, but
performance with Quicktime is very much degraded in
comparison to the G3/400 card I had in there. So far
that's the only thing I can tell that is different in
OS9. Otherwise things seem zippier, though not the
improvement I expected.
I used L2CacheConfig to grab the L2 cache settings
while in OS9, and imported them into 10.3.4 but I've
been having lockups in OSX (x-postfacto). Was trouble
free w/ the G3/400 card. Also, performance seems
sluggish. Not much, if any improvement, over the
G3/400 card.
Any thoughts on where to start?
I remember with the G3 card I had to set the L2 cache
to "write through" rather than "copy back" for
stability reasons. The settings came through that way
as well when I imported them for the OSX setup. But
the settings from the sonnet g4 install came through
in "write-back" mode (which I'm guessing is just a
different term for "copy-back". I can make changes in
the Cache settings with L2CacheConfig so I could try
messing around with that.
I've been reading the R31 resister removal debate with
much interest, but I hate to hack the mobo if it's not
necessary.
Steve
