You asked if I had other USB devices connected and the answer is no, this is
the first such device I have tried to connect. However, when I check my system
profiler I can see that the printer shows up as a device connected via the USB
port. I therefore assumed the port is open and works. Bad assumption?

If ASP sees it then there are other problems keeping it from working.
Getting the device recognized is half the battle.
Look for bad settings or reinstall the printer software.
Is the printer software compatible with your Mac OS version ?
Their may be third party software that will run your printer. It is usually expensive.
