This may not apply to you, but if all fails try it.
On my IIsi I continue to have the problem, which always comes back after a while.
To fix it I have to remove the speaker, clean contacts, slide speaker back in.
That cures it until contacts are bad again.

About a month ago, I turned on my trusty

still no sound. Since I mainly play games on this
machine, this is bad... Any ideas???

Try pulling the logic board and cleaning the connector edge with an eraser or electronics cleaner. It's also a good idea to pull and re-seat any RAM, cards, etc... if it has been sitting unused for a while.

Also check your sound control panel to make sure it's not set with the mute button "on".
