Hey all. I have a 7300/180 upgraded with a maxpower g4/400 card--has 300+ mb ram. It came with 8.6 installed, and I am kicking around going to 9.0 or 9.1 since I have read it has better stability, and has some core altivec-itude that makes better use of the g4. 1.Is there truly such a benefit from 9.x?
I wouldn't say OS 9 is more stable than OS 8.6 but there are more apps available for OS 9.1 like iTunes without using a hack. iMovie and 3rd party stuff too. I don't think OS 9 has any benefits with using a G4 over a G3.
2. Imac restore cd's. I see these are cheaper than the full installs for os's . If I went the route of imac intallers, are there any special procedures I have to jump through to get these to install on a non-imac machine as mine?
I have the OS 9.1 grey colored iMac install CD and it has worked on everything I tried it on including a LC580 with a 5500 board. But your milage may vary and the installer may not install key pieces of software in your Mac because it was designed for an iMac's specific needs. On the plus side mine has AppleWorks and some other cool stuff not on the retail OS CD's.
3.Also, I have some things that I don't have the installers for, such as the driver for the card, microsoft office, photoshop 5.5, ect. Would something like clean install assistant keep these programs, or would I need to track down the installers/cd's for these things?
If you don't have a license for the MS and Adobe apps then you will loose them installing OS 9 on your Mac.
Besides if it's an illegal copy you can't complain about loosing it........
You could add another drive and install OS 9x on it so you can keep your apps on 8.6, and even on the same drive with an app called System Picker if I remember right.
OS 9 or 9.1 should be installed on a fresh formatted drive. OS 9 is not an update, so you cannot update OS 8.6 to OS 9x.
You could try to copy the application and find all the relevant extensions and control panels and copy them to OS 9 after installing but if you miss anything the app may not work again.
The drivers for cards can easily be downloaded and may be newer than what you have installed anyway.
