One and two GB JAZ disks are extremely reliable backup media. We've been using them for years. They're also good, albeit expensive, for archival purposes.
They're a poor transport media, IMO, tho -- too fragile for shipping.
Yea. just don't drop it or your cartridge is doomed.
Exactly. JAZ discs are sensative to rough handling.
OTOH, we have ZIP discs that have been shipped all over the country, even overseas, repeatedly - none ever failed. We learned quickly that JAZ disks don't survive more than one or two mailings. :\
Personally, I would use a DVD-burner to backup my data these days, just because it's a bit cheaper and easier to deal with.
Depends on your frequency of backup and your retention plans.
Burned CDs, be they CD-x or DVD-x, degrade. We have dozens of discs full of errors that are only a year or two old. Not good.
JAZ discs, on the other hand, can be used over and over, and their degridation rate is comparable to standard hard drives (>5 yrs, +/- stiction issues). At less than $30 each, after a year or so their cost per use becomes comparable to that of writable DVDs, with none of the reliability problems.
Of course, if you're talking about backing up very large quantities of data often, with a retention of less than 5 years, nothing beats a DAT currently...
