The recent crash of my 9600 really left me in the lurch and so I must begin
this task in earnest. I really need to be able to convert my files and stop
emailing them to work... I have seen several different programs,
(SoftWindows, Virtual PC), but don't know which to get. Most of the Mac
files that I want to convert are ClarisWorks/AppleWorks, but I also have a
bunch of pictures I want to save to a disk that can be read by a PC.

SoftWindows, Virtual PC are not converter programs but rather programs which run a DOS / Windows environment on a Mac in software.

I don't think those programs are going to do anything more for you than a Windows machine will.

There was ClarisWorks for Windows. It isn't sold new anymore but you might be able to find it on e-bay.

Most picture files are in a standard format that most OSes will read. Examples are JPEG, GIF and TIFF.
