I have a Power Mac 7600/132 that I picked up secondhand about 6 months ago. Last week the ethernet randomly just stopped working. I upgraded the system from 8.1 to 8.6 (with files I had on a defunct Performa 6360CD) and everything was (and still is) working fine except for the ethernet. In the AppleTalk and TCP/IP control panels I have no option for ethernet. I have the Apple Built-In Ethernet extension installed and open transport is fine, but I just don't have the option. I even tried booting from a zip disk I made before I had any trouble with it (it worked on my network previously and currently boots a 6100 and uses its onboard ethernet with no trouble as it always has) and I have the same problem. It's like the ethernet just isn't there.
Any suggestions? I've already zapped the pram 10 times and tried taking out the battery for 30 mins.
PRAM is unlikely to be an issue here.
If you aren't seeing Ethernet in the list then you either don't have the right driver installed or the hardware is not being recognized. While it's not uncommon to have either the RJ-45 or AAUI ports fail (most likely damaged due to external causes) it's pretty rare to have the NIC fail to the point the software can't see it.
I have:
Apple Enet Apple Built-In Ethernet
in my Extensions folder (WGS 8550, same basic logic board as the 7600). There are others but AFAIK one or both are needed for the built in Ethernet.
I believe the 6100 uses a different driver file. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting
