OK, but what about USB 2.0??
The HD world's dirty little secret:
1. There's no such thing as a USB hard drive.
2. There's no such thing as a Firewire hard drive.
They are IDE (and soon to be SATA) drives with bridge chips either on the drive's circuit board or somewhere else in the external case.
IOW, you can easily slap an IDE drive into an inexpensive external case. No need to pay the extreme premiums the mail-order houses chage for "external hard drives".
I've bought a number of IDE->USB and IDE->Firewire boxes from this place. Inexpensive and reliable. (+/-, see below)

I have an 8600 .. and not to pile more into the case.. but what about getting USB 2.0 working with an IDE drive external??
Anyone have that working ok?
8600 G3/400 384mb (6 x 64mb) ATTO SCSI ( 4gb 9.2.2 / 9gb 10.1.5) Keyspan USB 1.1 ATI Express GX (4mb)
I have yet to see anyone, including the guys at our local Apple Store, get an external drive working via USB using OS X Jaguar or Panther. (Donno about 10.1)
Drop the same drive in a IDE->Firewire box and they work great!
On OS 9... Are there drivers available for USB 2? It works at USB 1 speeds but ...bleh. slowwwww. I'd go with Firewire.
FWIW, - Dan.
