I have modified my PowerPC 8500 to include 2 ATA HDs off a Sonnet Trio PCI card ... and have no SCSI HDs in my current setup.

I really don't want both ATAs to be running ... one has the OS X on it, and the other is for backups and additional storage space. It rests on the floor in a cradle I built and I want to put an Illuminated Rocker Switch into the internal wiring that powers the 2nd ATA HD.

Is this safe to do? or really a No-No?

The RadioShack expert suggested I cut the RED wire on the power line (of the RED-BLACK-BLACK-YELLOW wires on my extra Y power line), and put one end on one outer post of the switch, and the other RED wire piece on the other outer post ... Then cut the BLACK wire (the one next to the RED one?), and after twisting it back together, put it on the 3rd, middle post of the switch.

I then plan to mount the switch on the external PowerPC 8500 casing ... after I figure out how to drill a 7/8" hole in it ...

Too vague for a response? ... Don't try this at home? ...

After Unmounting the 2nd drive, if it has been running, I could then turn it off.

Sound like it would work?
