Mozilla is open source, so yes it's perfectly legal. However it's not in the slightest as simple a task as you imply...the reason they stopped supporting OS 9 is not because they were evil minions of Steve trying to make you all give up your trusty OS 9 systems...it's because OS 9 was so different from their other supported platforms and required so much more work to try to shoehorn rapidly changing code into the OS 9 shoe.


For an OS officially abandoned by it's creator, and increasingly obsolete (we only have two people in the College still using OS 9, and one of them is simply waiting for a lull between grant applications for me to switch her main machine, out of 30 or so Mac users) the official team decided it wasn't worth the effort anymore.

The person who did WamCom has given up, too, and I think the problems with the WamCom release are indicative of the problems porting it.
