Click and hum could possibly be a very quiet breaking-glass sound, 
especially if it immediately freezes.  Let it crash and then plug in a 
display (either to the monitor port or the RCA/S-video out) and 
hopefully you'll get an error message.  My guess is some of your RAM is 
at fault.
