Trying to add a PCI USB card to my 8500 and it does not seem to fit well in the case. Maybe I need to twiddle with it more, but it seems to be too tight a fit where the ports leave the case.

Yes, just go slow and keep fiddling with it.
If you are careful you can preserve the brittle plastic tabs that hold the card in the back of the case .
So they can give you fits when you need to remove it. 8^O
I cannot relate in words how much I hate the 8500 case.
Pray that someone donates a 9600.
