Yes, I had a beige G3 266mHz desktop which came with a G3 labeled OS9 disc.
I later tried installing his on my 9600 and it wouldn't accept it. The error
was something like 'not compatible with this hardware'. I guess the
motherboard wasn't young enough.
If you've used an upgrade card there is still something in the hardware that
the installer detects as being part of the 8500.

Mail me off list with your address and I can maybe find one of my old
'spare' discs for you that I know works on a 9600.
