It is a 9500 derivative design, which was intentionally reduced to 8 DRAM
slots (from 12) in order to reduce competition with the 9500/9500.

The early 9500/9600 bus was just under 50 mHz. The later 8600/9600 bus
(Mach 5) was 50 MHz, exactly.

You can try experimenting with higher bus speeds, but 45 MHz was most
likely selected as the most stable choice for 225 MHz. 45 MHz * 5.0 = 225
MHz.

Apple never offered 225 MHz in their related models, but they did have a
233 MHz.

233 MHz / 5.0 = 46.6 MHz. And, those machine can get into trouble running
the bus above somewhere under 50 MHz ... perhaps around 47 MHz.

I have a 400 MHz G3 upgrade card in one of my PowerTower Pro 225s, and it
(the card) runs the bus at 46.9 MHz.

Oh, generic USB cards seem to work well in Power Tower Pros, but not
"combo" USB/Firewire cards. And, some USB-only cards don't work, either.

Really not much SCSI-Voodoo in a Power Tower Pro.

You can get into trouble with lots of drives, especially late model ones,
because the drives have active terminators, and only the last drive on
the physical cable should be terminated.

If you're really paranoid about Voodoo, get a terminator from a Q950 and
run all drives unterminated, installing the Q950 terminator in the last
connector.

The Q950's internal SCSI cable had an extra connector on the very end
reserved just for this terminator.
