Are there any PCI upgrades that the PTP 225 can NOT take ?? I notice it has 8 DIMM slots, and my 9600 and Daystar Genesis MP 800+ both have 12 DIMM slots. How diffeent is the logic board in these 8-DIMM clones??? It appears that the internal bus runs at only 45 MHz. Is this a problem ??
The PTP is architecturally identical to the 9500. That is, it uses the same chipset for its major components and the same ROMs. There do seem to be some differences in the minor components or the routing on the motherboard, from one revision of PTP to the next. For example, I've noticed that the buffer chips near the cache slot seem to vary from revision to revision. Yet, replacing the buffer chips on older models with faster buffer chips doesn't seem to make much if any difference in the behaviour of the board.
I have tested about half a dozen PTP boards and they all have run fine at up to 60 MHz bus speeds or faster. The trick is finding a CPU card that will run at those speeds. I have a PowerBoost Pro (604e) card which runs at up to 62 MHz+ so it's good for testing bus speed limits of motherboards. But I've found that my old 220/110 G3 upgrade won't run above 49 MHz, my XLR8 ZIF Carrier is happiest at about 53 MHz, a friend's 350/175 G3 goes up to about 58 MHz, etc.
When I see that a CPU card is limited to the same maximum speed on several different motherboards, but that each of those motherboards will go up to higher speeds depending on the CPU card, that looks like a CPU card limit, not a motherboard limit to me.
