hello,

had sent earlier with 'mac not communicating with monitor' and today have found that this was not the case...as it turns out problem seems to be in the boot-up process....

at this point after power-on mac now actually begins to boot:

power to monitor is available
boot process and drives are heard to make usual start-up noises
monitor screen lights up
cursur arrives on screen
"Mac OS 9.1" appears on screen
resolution changes a couple times
"starting up" progress block appears and about a 'quarter of an inch' of progress is shown

then it freezes

freezes both in booting from the regular startup disc and from rescue cd at the same place

have tried to boot with 'extensions off' (holding down space bar during start-up) but that has no effect...usual advise "starting up extensions off" doesn't appear

have tried "command, alt, p and r" that doesn't get to the 'chimes' but simply institutes a restart

have tried disconnecting power cable from source, re-seating memory and video modules and re-seated ATI 'Orion' video card (shows same boot results whether monitor is connected to pci card or mac's on-board video connection)

have not yet tried re-seating cpu board nor resetting 'cuda' button *yet*

have replaced pram batt then had to use original 'cause replacement new batt only measured 3.53 while old batt was 3.61

would removing a couple ram modules completely and trying for re-start make any sense?

making progress here but would appreciate any additional suggestions....

thanks,

dave dickerson, austin, tx
