then it freezes

freezes both in booting from the regular startup disc and from rescue cd at the same place


Make sure your DIMMs are identical - all 60 ns. A friend had the same experience with the boot-up process freezing in the same place until I discovered he had a 70 ns DIMM mixed with 60 ns ones. His 8600/300 would now complete the boot-up sequence.
