I would recommend at least Firewire.

Now, I've upgraded my Lombard and Pismo (nominally PCI-based) to 8X DVD
writers, both with dual-layer capability at 2.4X, and the results are not
good.

Not because of the drives, but because the EIDE bus to the media bay is
too noisy for 8X, is usually OK at 4X and is solid at 4X.

Absence of adequate grounds is the problem.

These fast drives all carry a "recommendation" that 80-wire/40-pin data
cables be utilized, even though these drives are not UATA/66/100/133.

These drives MUST have a virtually noiseless environment in order to
operate reliably, and the PB's media bay cannot provide that.

So, for DVD burning, my Pismo has an external combo USB/Firewire case
with a Pioneer DVR-110. These cases all appear have 80-wire/40-pin
cables. Both of mine do, anyway.

This (Firewire) will burn DVDs at the maximum speed of the drive (Pismo),
and with no coasters.

Ripping and viewing can be done using the internal DVD.

I have tried a DVD burn over USB (Lombard), and it was too slow for my
level of patience, although it was reliable.
