So far, I have tried the following, all without success: 1. Replaced the PRAM battery with a brand new one
my 7600 did not make a sound at and did not start at all when the processorcard was not properly seated or when there was some small shortcircuit, the machine would "feel" that and turn off faster than the audible click. a bad pram battery did also produce absolutely NO life . in an older mac maybe 8160 or so.
First, LEARN TO SNIP YOUR QUOTED TEXT!!! You quoted my entire tome of a response including the list footer (which is explicitly against the list etiquette that you should have read when you signed up) when you were only responding to maybe two sentences in my response. It wouldn't be so bad if so many folks weren't too lazy to snip.
Second, the 7600 and it's family are a different animal, but it's not surprising this would come up, since the original poster put this on PCI Macs instead of in 1st PowerMacs where it really belongs. The CPU slot found in the 7600 and the rest of the x500/x600 family has an odd dual height connector for the CPU. There are actually four rows of pins in the connector. Two on each side, but then an upper and a lower on each side. Either the upper or the lower (can't remember at the moment) is entirely power and ground connections.
If one fails to insert the CPU card all the way, one gets the power and ground connections at the wrong level and this can cause all kinds of shorts that would be bad for the computer, so there is some protection built in.
However, there is no such easy opportunity for short circuits in the x100 family of machines. Of course you can still find ways to create one, but nothing so easy as a partially inserted upgrade.
Second, the original poster wrote in his message that he had already tried a new PRAM battery, so I doubt that's the problem. However, there's no real harm in your bringing it up again. And it let's me show you an example of properly snipped text. See above. Teh only relevant bit from the original poster's message is left above. The rest has been ruthlessly snipped.
