I had three different chipsets with no success. 1 VIA (USB 1.1) didn't
work at all. 1 VIA (USB 2.0) showed in the system profiller didn't
work. 1 NEC (USB 2.0) again showed in the system profiller and didn't
work. There are a couple of possibilities of whats happening

1. There are too many controllers on one card. Some say they only work
with just one controller on a card. Most new cards have one controller
per port.

2. Too many ports. Some say you can only have two ports.

3. No USB 2.0 compatibility (not even at USB 1.1 speeds). It could be
that USB 2.0 cards just don't work.

4. PCI card to PCI slot incompatibility. Most old macs have PCI 2.0.
Most new cards are 2.1. This could very likely be the problem.

5.Something else.

Out of my cards I never got it to work so I gave up. At the end of the
week there was an iMac 333 with 64MB of RAM, two USB Ports built in
and a Microsoft USB optical intellimouse for only AUS$30 or US$22.This
is the same price one of the USB cards cost, luckily I got my money
back.

In the end, there are plenty of things you can do with your old
computer even if it doesn't have USB.
