A kind soul on the swap list sold me a 300 MHz 604e processor card, and
during the last few days I tried to swap the cards with no luck: the
faster one (Apple 820-0823-A, set @ 300 MHz) will not boot - no
start-up chime, no HD activity (other than the initial spin), nada.
Plugging back the original CPU brings the 7500 back to life.
You're outta luck with that particular processor card. Any Apple
branded 250 MHz+ 604e is a Mach V card for the Kansas motherboard
8600/9600; it won't work in anything but the last revision 8600/9600.
There are 225-250 MHz 604e's from the Power Computing and Umax/SuperMac
clones that will work in the 7500, but you won't find any faster 604e's
that do.
Will the Swaplister who sold you the card take it back in trade on a G3
card? Virtually any G3 upgrade will be a huge leap upward from what
you have now - even a "low end" 233-275 MHz will make it feel like a
new Mac. Many of those older, 300 MHz or less G3's are gathering dust
these days and can be had for a song. Talk with the original seller,
and if you have no luck there post to the Swaplist about a possible
swap/cash deal and see what happens....
